SYMBOL OF LOVE
From ancient times to today, roses have symbolized love and served as a source of artistic inspiration. In every era, they remind us of the many forms of love and the richness of life.
In ancient Greece and Rome, roses were revered as symbols of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. The Greeks adored roses, but the Romans were even more passionate—they cultivated them, enjoyed their fragrance, decorated their homes with them, and found comfort and healing in their presence. Later, roses became widely associated with the Virgin Mary’s love, and in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, they were famously honored with the line, “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” Even today, roses appear in literature and art, such as in The Little Prince, symbolizing many facets of love.
NEW ROSES
One woman who played a key role in the history of roses was Joséphine Bonaparte, the wife of Napoleon. Known as the “Queen of Roses,” she passionately collected nearly every known variety at the time. Her extensive collection became the foundation for new rose breeds, leading to the incredible diversity of shapes and colors we enjoy today—and deepening the world’s fascination with roses.
